There is a good view of Island Peak (Imja Tse, 6189m), with Cho Polu on the right, on the descent from the Kongma La towards Bibre. The peak was named Island Peak in 1952 by Eric Shipton since it looked like an island in a sea of ice. Island Peak was first climbed in 1953 by a British team as a training exercise in preparation for Mount Everest. Tenzing Norgay was one of the members of this first ascent team.
